Second edition of InnovateItaly 2009 RESULTS:

Participations:

drop 75 contest participants (35% growth vs 2008 edition)
drop

27 different groups subscribed the Innovation contest

drop

Up to 14 different Italian Universities including the most famous one

The examination of the submitted papers led to the selection of 10 finalists. Among the 10 finalists we selected the top three.
The ranking among them was pretty difficult since all of them were very valuable
The evaluation was based on the following criteria:

drop Design Concept
  1.Complexity
2.Functionality
drop Design Implementation
drop Documentation

The winner of 2009 InnovateItaly Design Contest is....

drop  “Design of a "Walkie-Talkie over IP”
drop

University: Politecnico of Torino

drop

Team Members: Sandro Cuciz

drop

Advisor: Prof. Frabrizio Vacca

drop Description:
Fully integrated IP Walkie Talkie system implemented on NIOS with open source Linux system Voice over IP implementation Implementation of Multicast concept Could easily evolve with wireless support emulating a full stand-alone Walkie Talkie over WI-Fi networks Live Demo demonstrated at SOPC World Seminar

1° prize: Award event for InnovateItaly 2009 Design Contest during the Altera SOPC World seminar in Milan, 6th  November 2009

The demo of 4 DE2 boards running the IP Walkie Talkie application connected to an Ethernet switch.
Each board with its own speaker and mike works like a Walkie Talki with Puth To Talk button. Voice samples are captured and send over an IP network with multicast protocol.

The whole application has been embedded inside the Cyclone FPGA with a NIOS running a full Linux system.

Second Place:

“FPGA-Based High Resolution Time to Digital Converter”
University: Politecnico of Bari
Team Members: Mariafrancesca de Ruvo, Gianluigi de Ruvo
Advisor: Prof. Francesco Marino
Description:
TDC can be applied into several fields ie: in scientific research application it used for estimating the life time of sub-atomic particle in high energy experiments. In military application it can be used for laser ranging systems or for measurements of distances, flows, density, thikness, etc. In this implementation the student was able to

Third Place:
“An application specific processor for deinterlacing race car images”
University of Pavia
Team Member: Gianni Danese, Mauri Giachero, Nelson Nazzicari, Alessandra Majani
Advisor: Prof. Francesco Leporati
Description:
The project is part of a collaboration between University of Pavia and Marelli Motorsport that aims to create a vision system able to monitor and elaborate videos from cameras mounted directly on racecars
