Participations:
On 25th of November there was the awards ceremony of the InnovateItaly Altera Design Contest, 2010 edition. The celebration was in Villa Trivulzio, an architectural jewel in Omate (www.villatrivulzio.it).
drop 34 contest participants
drop 18 different groups subscribed the Innovation contest
drop Up to 12 different Italian Universities including the most famous one

The examination of the submitted papers led to the selection of 10 finalists. Among the 10 finalists we selected the top three (really four because of ex-aequo).
The ranking among them was pretty difficult since all of them were very valuable
The evaluation was based on the following criteria:
drop Design Concept
  1.Complexity
2.Functionality
drop Design Implementation
drop Documentation

First Position: ex-aequo
drop Title: “STL - Safe Traffic Light”
drop Università di Parma
drop Team Member: Davide Marani
drop Advisor: Prof. Guido Matrella
drop Description:
an innovative safety system for traffic light with an embedded vision camera being able to automatically recognize a dangerous situation (ie: pedestrian crossing with red traffic light) and take corrective action. The development is based on PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) techniques. A video of the working system is available here. A presentation (in Italian language) is available here.

First Position: ex-aequo
drop Title: “Hard real-time meets embedded multicore SoPCs”
drop Università di Bologna
drop Team Member: Primiano Tucci
drop Advisor: Prof. Eugenio Faldella
drop Description:
A real-time platform for multiprocessor system based on SOPC (Systemo On Programmable Chip) within Quartus. The heart of the implementation is an Hardware Real Time Schedule and all relative SW component which allows to minimize the overhead of soft-processor for task handling. A presentation (in Italian language) is available here.
